The Tri-State Freethinkers reaffirms its support of women, LGBTQ people, minorities and the rationally minded

Election season has finally come to a close and the outcome couldn’t be more foreboding for atheists, freethinkers, members of the LGBTQ community, minorities and those who support equal rights and the separation of church and state. With the election of Donald Trump and Mike Pence, in addition to what is now a conservative majority House of Representatives and Senate – not to mention  near-certain appointments of ultra-conservative Supreme Court justices in the future, we are left with a choice: Either wallow in self-pity or rise up and stand together, determined to fight back against the regressive ideologies of those…

There are some people who believe the world is still flat

0

There was a time in human history when people truly thought the Earth was flat. The great thinkers of that era no doubt looked across the glorious plane before them and smiled to themselves. They had it all figured out. Figures like Emperor Constantine (272 – 337), the first Roman emperor to claim conversion to Christianity, claimed a round Earth was the belief of heretics, pointing to scripture as the final answer on the matter. We live at a fortuitous point in time in many ways. The Internet, space exploration, ever-expanding knowledge on genes, an (admittedly slow) advancement toward more…

Myers Briggs Type Indicators Shouldn’t Inform Anyone’s Daily Life

Ghosts, psychics, horoscopes and demons. These are all things I, as a self-proclaimed freethinker, have rejected. There simply isn’t any hard evidence to support the veracity of these things. Sure, I allow that they may be real, but without any reliable to way to verify their realness, why should I spend my time thinking they are? Another example of such a weak idea is the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator(MBTI). Before I get in too deep, we need to clarify a term: Freethinker. It’s a word that calls up ideas like open mindedness, rumination and independence of thought. It’s also a word…

First Amendment Defense Act relegates LGBT communities to second class citizens

Tri-State Freethinkers object to proposed bill H.R.2802 First Amendment Defense Act, which “Prohibits the federal government from taking discriminatory action against a person on the basis that such person believes or acts in accordance with a religious belief or moral conviction that: (1) marriage is or should be recognized as the union of one man and one woman, or (2) sexual relations are properly reserved to such a marriage.” While the title of the bill suggests that it champions the protections outlined in the First Amendment, a read through the bill’s text reveals that it does anything but. To…

A quote painted on a wall in an Oklahoma public school read “Miracles alter flow unseen through our lives, so let us remember to thank God for our daily blessings.” Thanks to a complaint letter from the Freedom From Religion Foundation, the message was removed. Tri-State Freethinkers have received similar complaints from parents in tri-state area of everything from classroom decorations encouraging prayer, to lesson plans laced with Intelligent Design. We are able to keep parents and students anonymous while informing the school of the violation of the Establishment Clause and relevant case law. Please bring any violations to our…
